Luke 17:31-3331 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32 Remember Lot’s wife! 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.
In this scripture, the Lord uses the tragic death of Lot's wife to warn mankind against the love of possessions, wealth and the things of the world. That's to say that although the angels of God had helped Lot's family to get out of Sodom prior to its destruction, the heart of Lot's wife was still in Sodom. She loved the pleasurable things, the beauty and the wealth they had left in Sodom, more than the salvation God was presenting to them; therefore, she looked back contrary to God's command!
How did Lot's wife abuse God's grace?
Number one, for years Lot's wife had lived and journeyed with Abraham the prophet of God and friend of God. This closeness to their relative Abraham was a great opportunity for Lot's wife to learn the ways of God and be holy.
Secondly, Lot himself was a righteous man (2 Peter 2:7-9). He had learned righteousness through their spiritual father Abraham. His righteousness is seen when he welcomed the angels of God to his house, and how he protected them against the immoral men of Sodom. Despite living with a holy husband for years, Lot's wife did not learn the righteous ways of God!
Lastly, when the angels of God came to Sodom, the only house they entered was Lot's. These angels must have ministered the eternal Gospel of righteousness, HOLINESS and the fear of God to Lot's family. And further to that, the angels physically held the hands of Lot, his wife and children, leading them out of Sodom. But with all that, still Lot's wife did not understand the will of God. Therefore, God destroyed her eternally. Please remember Lot's wife.
